Frequently Asked Questions
Before applying to volunteer with Friends of the Street Africa, here are important things to know:
- Our work is hands-on and emotional. You will interact directly with street-connected children and youth who have experienced trauma, abuse, and hardship. Empathy, patience, and emotional resilience are essential.
- Commitment matters more than experience. We value consistent and reliable volunteers. Even 3–4 hours per week (especially on Saturdays for outreach) can make a big difference.
- Safety and child protection come first. All volunteers working directly with children must undergo a basic background/reference check and follow our strict Child Protection Policy.
- We work in challenging environments. Outreach happens on the streets, in parks, and informal settlements. Be prepared for dust, sun, rain, and sometimes difficult conditions.
- Cultural sensitivity is required. You will meet children and youth from diverse backgrounds. Respect, humility, and a non-judgmental attitude are very important.
- No previous experience is needed. Training and orientation will be provided. What we need most is your heart, time, and willingness to learn.
- Volunteers must be 18 years and above. Younger applicants (16–17 years) may be considered only with written parental/guardian consent and supervision.
- We are a small team with big dreams. Everyone helps where needed — flexibility and a team spirit will help you enjoy volunteering with us.
- You will work directly with street children who have faced trauma — empathy and patience are important.
