Football for Change: Bringing Joy, Teamwork, and Hope to Nairobi’s Street Youth Every Week

At Friends of the Street Africa, we know that street-residents children and youth often carry heavy burdens — hunger, loneliness, uncertainty, and little chance to just be kids. That’s why we created Football for Change, a simple but powerful program that uses the beautiful game to restore smiles, build confidence, teach life lessons, and create safe, joyful moments on the field.

Every Monday and Tuesday mornings and afternoon, and on the last Saturday of every month, our young people gather at Katoto ka Chini — a well-known community field along Park Road in Nairobi. This dusty pitch, surrounded by the sounds of the city, becomes a temporary escape from the streets. Here, the focus shifts from survival to play: passing the ball, cheering for teammates, celebrating goals, and learning what it feels like to belong to something bigger than yourself.

The sessions are open to all the boys and girls we support through our outreach. No experience is needed — just a willingness to run, laugh, and try. Our volunteer coaches Hussein lead fun warm-ups, skill drills, small-sided matches, and sometimes mini-tournaments on the bigger Saturday days. We provide water, simple snacks when possible, and a lot of encouragement.

Beyond the fun, football teaches so much: discipline to show up on time, respect for rules and opponents, teamwork to pass instead of hogging the ball, resilience after losing, and joy in small victories. These values stay with them long after the whistle blows. Many of our players have grown more confident, made positive friends, and even started dreaming bigger — some talk about joining local youth teams or one day playing professionally.

Katoto ka Chini has become more than a field; it’s a place of hope where street youth feel seen, valued, and safe. The regular rhythm — twice a week plus that special end-of-month Saturday — gives them something consistent to look forward to, week after week.

This program runs thanks to your support: donated balls, volunteer time, small contributions for water and snacks, and prayers that keep the energy high. If you’re in Nairobi, come join us sometime — cheer from the sidelines, volunteer as a coach, or help sponsor a session.

Together we’re showing that no child belongs invisible on the streets. They belong on the pitch, chasing the ball, chasing dreams, chasing a better tomorrow — one goal at a time.

Football for Change: Kicking stigma out, kicking hope in.
