At Friends of the Street Africa, our Street Outreach Program is the heartbeat of everything we do. Every Saturday, our dedicated team heads to the streets of Nairobi — mainly around Michuki Park and other known spots where street-connected children and youth gather — to meet them right where they are.
We don’t wait for them to come to us. We go to them with hot meals, clean drinking water, basic first aid, clothing when available, and most importantly, time and listening ears. These young people face hunger, cold nights, illness, rejection, and danger every day. Our outreach is a consistent reminder that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.
The program is simple but powerful:
- Hot meals — We prepare and distribute nutritious food like ugali, beans, rice, chapati, and vegetables. For many, this is the most reliable meal they get all week.
- First aid and health support — Minor wounds, infections, or illnesses are treated on the spot. We also connect those needing more care to clinics or partners.
- Trust-building conversations — Volunteers sit with the youth, ask how they’re doing, share encouragement, pray if they want, and listen without judgment. This is where real relationships start.
- Referral and rescue — When a child or youth expresses readiness for change — whether it’s school, vocational training, family reunification, or shelter — we connect them to trusted partners like Made in the Streets, rescue homes, or other organizations.
- Fun and play — We sometimes bring balls for quick games or just chat about dreams, football, or life beyond the streets.
What makes our outreach special is consistency. Week after week, the same faces return — not just for food, but because they know they’ll find kindness, dignity, and hope. Many of our success stories, like Asumpta (Rayan), Shila, Christian, and others now in school or training, began with someone showing up on a Saturday and saying, “You’re worth it. Let’s walk this journey together.”
This work is only possible because of generous donors who fund meals and supplies, volunteers who give their time, and prayer partners who lift us up. Every Saturday, we see small miracles: a smile after a tough week, a young person opening up about wanting to go back to school, or a group laughing together for the first time in a long while.
No child belongs on the street. Our outreach is our way of saying: You matter. We’re here. And change is possible — one Saturday at a time.
